August 14, 2009 – The all-new 2011 Infiniti M was revealed today at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the famed celebration of timeless automotive design. Infiniti Senior Vice President and Design Director, Shiro Nakamura, unveiled the completely redesigned M in a dynamic 3D digital presentation showing how the M has been transformed through natural inspiration and passionate craftsmanship into a luxury sedan of sculpted form and rejuvenating refinement.

Infiniti wanted to reveal its lower, wider, sleeker, more powerful, upcoming 2011 M Sedan during Pebble Beach weekend.  Just one problem: they didn't have one yet.  Or at least, didn't have a real one that they could show.  They have one or two well-detailed clay models.  And they've got some M test mules running around, but those still wear the old M bodywork.  The fix that the Infiniti team came up with is a clever one.

Infiniti and Hearst Partner to Use Cutting-Edge Technology to Preview the All-New 2011 Infiniti M

Hearst Magazines’ Esquire; Harper’s Bazaar; O, The Oprah Magazine; SmartMoney; and Town&Country will join forces with Infiniti to kick off The Infiniti Journey of Inspiration to preview the all-new 2011 Infiniti M and the North American debut of the Infiniti Essence Concept at the 59th annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.  Partnering for the third year, Hearst and Infiniti will create an immersive 360°, multimedia experience that will be open to the public from August 13th through the 16th.<< MORE >>

The JDM Nissan Fuga is due for a comprehensive overhaul, and according to a report by Japan's Holiday Auto, we can expect to see the redesigned sedan at this fall's Tokyo Motor Show.

These sketches were inspired by a recent batch of spy shots and as expected, the Fuga - which serves as the basis for the Infiniti M in the States - will undergo a thorough exterior makeover, taking cues from the Essence concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show. The headlamps will continue to be stretched further over the fenders, while the taillights and bumper will be more smoothly integrated into the bulbous rump. We're hoping the most interesting element of the Essence - the curved, creased and indented C-pillar - will make a successful transition from concept to production. Expect the Fuga to go on sale in Japan early next year, with the fully-redesigned Infiniti M to debut soon thereafter.

        

The long-awaited Cash for Clunkers legislation has passed. Here's what you need to know about the auto trade-in program:

1. What's the official definition of a clunker? A driveable automobile made within the last 25 years, with a fuel economy rating of no more than 18 mpg.
2. Here's how the program works: you trade in your old automobile for cash towards the purchase of a new, more efficient one. The better the mileage of the new car, the more money you'll get towards its purchase - either $3,500 or $4,500. The minimum combined fuel economy of a new car purchased under the program must be at least 22 mpg, while new small trucks and SUVs have to get at least 18 mpg, and large trucks have to get 15 mpg. The old cars will be salvaged once they're turned in.
3. Consumers should act fast. The bill provides vouchers for one million purchases, and the window of time is only from July 1 to November 1. The bill will be revisited in the fall, and some changes may be made at that time.
4. The program will cost four million dollars. Funds will come from TARP.
5. Sorry, would-be entrepreneurs: it's off-limits to buy an old car and "flip" it for the program - the car must have been insured by the same owner for at least one year before the trade.
6. The environmental idea behind the bill is that it takes old, inefficient vehicles off of the road.

AutoPacific, which has provided automotive analysis to carmakers since 1986, bases its findings on a just-completed comprehensive survey of more than 25,000 consumers who purchased or leased new cars or light trucks in the period from September to December 2008.
